Really excited to review this beer, it’s one of my all-time favorites and an amazing beer. Prior to moving to CA I’d never had anything from Firestone Walker, now I’m a huge fan. As you know, I’m a huge fan of Black IPAs….so, clearly this is my kind of beer
Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA – Firestone Walker Brewing
Presentation: Beautiful dark, rich IPA that pours well out of the bottle. You can see the thin tan foamy head in the picture above, it almost looks like a Porter until you smell it and the citrus and hops just pop. There is no denying it’s an IPA as soon as you smell it. Very malty and hoppy….for me, it’s exactly what I’m looking for in this style.
Style: American Black Ale (Black Rye IPA)
Brewery: Firestone Walker Brewing
ABV: 8.3% – almost perfect
IBU: 80 (nice a bitter but not an overpowering hop bomb)
Method: 22oz bomber glass
Overall taste: Just ridiculous, honestly, it’s great. Rich, deep chocolate overtones from the malts and a nice citrus/hoppy finish that is a bit more bitter than dank. Very nice stuff, I could drink this for hours.
Recommended drinking location: Anywhere you’d drink an IPA…
Ideal consumption amount: It comes in 22oz’s so I’d recommend two of them, any more than that and you’d be asking for trouble.
Similar Beers: It compares very well to Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous and is better than 21st Amendment “Back in Black”. You could also try Clown Shoes “Hoppy Feet” which is another favorite.
